We’re serious about sustainability. And fluffy sheep.

We’re serious about sustainability. And fluffy sheep.

We make reusable apparel to manage life’s leaks because it’s better for your body… and better for the planet. Our products have a purpose, are made from fabrics which feel good (and do good), and are an eco-friendly way to manage periods, incontinence and leaks, day after day, month after month, year after year.

We’re working with our partners and suppliers to challenge each other to find more efficient, earth-friendly ways of working because collaboration accelerates change. And changing what you wear can change the world.

We’ve identified five key areas for improvement to make the biggest impact for people…and the planet.

A better way

For us, the war on waste is more than words. That’s why we’re pushing for a switch from disposable, single-use products to reusable options.

Did you know...?

    • At any one time over 800 million women around the globe are menstruating.
    • Up to 90% of a menstrual pad and 6% of a tampon is plastic.
    • One pack of pads contains the same amount of plastic as five single-use plastic bags.
    • Pads take 500+ years to biodegrade – so the first period and sanitary pads ever made could still be in landfill.
    1. In the UK alone, about 200,000 tonnes of sanitary waste is created every year with the majority being incinerated, producing CO2 emissions.
        • A menstruating person uses approximately 11,000 tampons in their lifetime.
      • Menstrual products are one of the most frequently found single-use plastic items in marine litter.
  • The average menstruating person in Australia and New Zealand will fill the equivalent of 35 to 40 red wheelie bins with sanitary waste in their lifetime.*

Better materials

We know our fabric choices have an environmental impact, so we choose premium biodegradable and recycled materials whenever we can. Modibodi products have been tested for harmful substances according to Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX®️

Safely protecting you from leaks while helping preserve the planet. Win, win.

One of the most hygienic, stain and odour-resistant materials available, bamboo is breathable, soft, luxurious and comfortable.

Even better, bamboo plantations grow rapidly and self-generate without the need for pesticides, insecticides or fertilisers. They also require little water. To improve sustainability, our factory reprocesses wastewater before release, and uses a waste air recovery system and an Alkali recovery system.

Organic Cotton

Compared to traditional cotton, organic cotton saves a vast amount of water, is grown without harmful chemicals, helps the soil retain its natural nutrients and protects farmers, factory workers and eco-systems from chemical exposure. Need we say more? (Maybe just a little...)

Conventional cotton uses as much as 16% of global insecticides and 7% of pesticides. Not-for-profit organisation Textile Exchange says organic cotton is ‘46% less harmful to global warming, provides 70% less acidification of land and water, reduces the potential for soil erosion by 26%, reduces surface and groundwater use by 91% and may reduce energy demand by as much as 62%’.

Merino Wool

Merino wool is magical stuff. It’s soft, natural, renewable, biodegradable and moisture wicking to keep you dry and gentle on sensitive skin – which is why we use it in our absorbent gussets of course (except in our vegan range). If only our hair was as clever as theirs.

Our wool is 95% Australian farmed merino, and we only work with certified farmers to ensure our fibres come from happy, healthy non-mulesing sheep.

Most of our merino wool comes from Coonong Station, near Wagga Wagga in NSW Australia, and Glenwood Merinos, in Wellington, NZ.

Many Australian farmers practice regenerative farming to support soil health, biodiversity and lock carbon back into the soil. Our farmers meet the Responsible Wool Standard and follow the Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines.

Harvesting wool is sustainable (human labour which doesn’t damage the environment), and, as a natural fibre, the wool manufacturing process (cleaning, combing, spinning, knitting, dyeing, sewing) doesn’t require the same harsh chemicals as synthetic fibres.

Recycled Nylon

Recycled fabrics can be pre-consumer (unused textiles or yarn) or post-consumer (used fishing nets and water bottles).

We use pre-consumer nylon to eliminate the need to produce virgin nylon and reduce the amount of fabric waste heading to landfill. Plus, recycled nylon is produced without the use of petroleum, saving water, energy and additional Co2 emissions.

Since microfibres may still be released when washing recycled fabrics, we suggest using a Guppyfriend washing bag to protect your garment, and our waterways.

Sustainable production
& responsible sourcing

Ethical manufacturing and environmentally-friendly production are key to our commitment to being a sustainable brand. That’s why we work with our suppliers to learn, improve and set environmental and social standards which give us confidence in our products throughout their life cycle.

Each year, our manufacturers are audited under the Business Social Compliance Initiative, BSCI, which we use to ensure the ethical working conditions in our factories. This includes: freedom to gather, fair working hours and pay, health and safety, no child labour, and following the principles of the International Labor Organisation.

We work with our factories to improve their understanding and commitment to sustainable production. During 2021-22, we’re moving our factories towards the OEKO-TEX ® STeP process, which certifies a commitment to sustainable production and a process of continuous improvement. Our first factory is already certified.

Better packaging

Photography : Better Packaging Co.

We want our products to come to you dry, safe and plastic-free. That’s why your Modibodi arrives in a compostable ComPOST parcel bag made from GMO-free renewable plants and compostable resin – avoiding 60% of Co2 emissions compared to a traditional plastic parcel bag. According to the Better Packaging Co., its production is partly neutral in its climate positive scheme since it offsets its carbon emissions by 120%.

After opening your parcel, cut off the postal stickers (we’re working to have couriers and postal services use compostable ones), and put it into your compost bin with your food and garden waste, or access a commercial compost collection. Soon enough, the worms will be eating it for breakfast. Happy customer, happy worms, happy planet.

The 17 Goals
Sustainable Development

We support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, a framework for governments, businesses and individuals to help address global environmental, social and economic challenges. We’re aligning our actions with these aspirational goals and have identified eight goals that we can directly impact.

No Poverty

We know that millions of people around the world are not paid fairly and textile manufacturing is no different, however we are determined to help eradicate poverty by ensuring workers are paid fairly. Our BSCI auditing allows us to act to ensure workers are paid appropriately.

Good Health and Wellbeing

Our goal is continuous improvement, so we’re trying to eliminate harmful chemicals from our supply chain by choosing more sustainable fabrics, and like-minded suppliers. Our products are currently undergoing Oeko-TEX certification, and we’re continuing to source fabrics made with sustainable ‘closed-loop’ production systems and natural dyes to limit environmental pollution.

Gender Equality

We’re proud to celebrate bodies of all sizes, genders, races and abilities in our designs and campaigns. We also advocate for the rights of menstruating people through our ‘this tax is pants’ campaign to remove taxes on sanitary products.

Clean Water and Sanitation

We recognise that water is a scarce resource, and that textiles are often produced in regions where it’s particularly scarce. Our bamboo and organic cotton both require very little water to grow – and no fertilisers.

SDG 12

Responsible Consumption and Production

Modibodi focuses on making sustainable consumption and production mainstream though circular design. This model designs out waste and keep resources in the supply chain which we do by using pre-consumer recycled nylon.

SDG 13

Climate Action

As maritime freight transport is the most environmentally-friendly, Modibodi has a goal of transporting 90% of its garments by ship to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

SDG 14

Life Below Water

By focusing on fabrics made from renewable resources, Modibodi limits marine pollution, such as microfibres. For our recycled nylon, we suggest the use of a Guppyfriend laundry bag when using your washing machine.

SDG 15

Life On Land

We strive to use sustainable textiles which don’t lead to forest destruction and deforestation, while supporting habitats for biodiversity. Our goal is to source only FSC-certified bamboo from sustainably-managed forests.
