At Modibodi, the future of the planet is important to us. Our commitment to become even more sustainable – and help you do it too – is our number one priority.
During January, we’ve been profiling activists from around the world who inspire us to do better, and learning about their experiences campaigning for a better planet.
This week we hear from Tiara De Silva, a 19-year-old Sri Lankan human rights, mental health and climate activist currently studying politics at the University of New South Wales. She has recently started her role as Youth Ambassador for ‘Reach Out Australia’.
Who/what inspired you to become environmentally focused?
- I became inspired after collaborating with Greenpeace International back in September 2019 for a Climate Strike, where I met people who were passionate about the importance of implementing changes in their daily lives. I’m also inspired by environmentally-conscious brands such as Modibodi, who help me become more eco-focused in my own daily life.
Were you a sustainable family growing up?
- As a family of 5, sustainability gradually became a priority in my family as I grew up.
What big/small changes have you made to be more sustainable in your life?
Eating less meat and investing in environmentally friendly products which produce less waste, like reusable water bottles, reusable bags and Modibodi underwear.
Has the environment always been a big part of your life?
I’ve always loved the environment, and as I’ve grown up I’ve realised how important it is to be aware of the consequences of our actions, and how our behaviour contributes to damaging the environment. As a child, I loved visiting Sri Lanka, where my parents were born, and connecting to the country’s lush green landscape and the beaches of Hikkaduwa. I’m grateful that I’ve learnt about the importance of the environment, not just in Sri Lanka or Australia, but on a global scale.
What tips can you give your community to help make changes in their daily lives?
There are many small changes you can make at home or in your community to initiate change. One of my main tips would be to TRY and cut out plastics. Easier said than done right? Plastic seems to have found its way into every aspect of our lives, and sometimes it just seems so convenient. To reduce plastic consumption and monitor my eating habits, I’ve started taking canvas bags everywhere I go, eating less meat and buying less bottled water.
Would you consider working with brands that did not align with your values? Is this important to you?
No. I wouldn’t enjoy or want to work for a brand that didn’t share my values.
At Modibodi, we believe the actions we take over the next few years are crucial. When just 100,000 people use Modibodi alone from the start of their menstrual cycle, it will prevent 11 billion disposable hygiene products from ending up in landfill. Help us to help the planet - and choose to reuse.
