International Womens Day: How can you get involved?

International Womens Day: How can you get involved?

Mar 08, 2017Alice Cheng

International Women's Day is on the 8th March 2017, and this year's theme is ‘Be Bold for Change.’ Modibodi couldn't love this theme more, as being bold and creating change for women and the world is what we are all about as a brand.

This day is a time for celebrating all the many achievements of women all over the world, whether they be social, cultural, economic or political with a large focus on increasing the push and progress toward gender parity (the access to education of males and females).

International Women's Day has actually been around since the 1900’s and has brought together a wide array of organisations, charities and groups who are all fighting for a more gender positive world!

This years theme, ‘Be Bold for Change’ really encourages everyone to get involved, as it is all inclusive and can apply to us all in some way.

There is no denying that there have been issues over the past few months, particularly the Trump Administration and concern that new policies such as the Global Gag Rule may jeopardise women's rights and take a step in the wrong direction. This is a time for people to have their own voice and opinion and a time to recognise that every woman is important and deserves to be recognised.

The Official Website states "Each one of us — with women, men and nonbinary people joining forces — can be a leader within our own spheres of influence by taking bold pragmatic action to accelerate gender parity. Through purposeful collaboration, we can help women advance and unleash the limitless potential offered to economies the world over."

Modibodi as a company wants to Be Bold for Change in the area of women's health. We want all women regardless of financial status or geographical location to have access to necessary feminine hygiene products, but we also want these to be sustainable and reusable to best benefit these women in the long term.

That's why we have partnered with organisations such as Share the Dignity and have been involved in projects such as Vox Populi delivering our Modibodi underwear to a remote village in Tao to ensure the women there are protected during menstruation.

Other ways of getting involved in the International Women’s Day campaign includes purchasing products from companies that support women and supporting a woman-owned business. As Modibodi is a company who is involved in both of these movements, it’s really great to see that this is being recognised as a way of positively creating change for women! You can also trust that purchasing a pair of Modibodi underwear isn’t simply buying a pair of undies, but instead is contributing to a more equal society.

Further in 2017, Modibodi will continue to be committed to promoting the empowerment of both women and men through education, particularly on the topic of menstruation in third world countries, as women still suffer great educational disadvantages and social isolation during their periods. We want to encourage others to talk about menstruation in open conversation, ask questions, educate themselves and ensure equality.

As Gloria Steinem, the world renowned feminist, journalist, and activist pointed out “"The story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights,"

Fighting for the rights of women and gender equality doesn’t rest solely on women or those who are in a position to make a change that will be noticed on a wider platform, it is for anyone with an interest in human rights and making a positive contribution to society.

Little things you can do to support international women's day
  1. Support small, female owned businesses
  2. Donate to a cause that supports women
  3. Encourage the women you know
  4. Wear red - Symbolising revolutionary love and sacrifice, this colour represents female strength and solidarity
  5. Educate yourself and others
